WATAUGA COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
 
SPECIAL MEETING, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2008
 
            The Watauga County Board of Commissioners attended a special meeting on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at the Town of Boone Council Chambers, Boone, NC. Those present were: Chairman Deal; Vice-Chairman Winkler, Commissioner Cooper, Commissioner Kinsey, Commissioner Moretz, County Manager Nelson, Deputy County Manager Geouque, Clerk to the Board Fogle, and Planning Director Furman. Others present with the Town of Boone were as follows: Mayor Loretta Clawson; Mayor Pro Tem Lynne Mason; Council Members Janet Pepin, Rennie Brantz, Stephen Phillips and Liz Aycock; Town Manager Greg Young; Town Attorney Sam Furgiuele; Public Utilities Director Rick Miller; Police Chief Bill Post; Fire Chief Reggie Hassler; and Town Clerk Freida VanAllen.
 
The joint meeting was called to order at 5:08 P.M.
 
Water/Sewer Issues
 
            Lengthy discussion was held concerning water and sewer issues in the Town and County focusing mainly on providing water and sewer to County-owned property on Brookshire Road for possible future affordable housing projects. Discussion was also held regarding the Town’s water intake project regarding which Town Manager Greg Young stated that he would like to appear before the Board of Commissioners to present their plans.
 
Recreation Issues
 
            Chairman Deal discussed the Commissioners’ concerns over the Town of Boone’s funding cut for the County’s recreation program for FY 2009. He also explained the County’s reasoning for changing the Fire District supplement amounts for FY 2009.
 
            Lengthy discussion was held regarding recreation funding.
 
            The meeting was adjourned at 6:47 P.M.
