Beginning on Wednesday, October 16, 2024: all Watauga County convenience sites will be operating on their normal hours. This includes Saturday operations and Sunday for the old landfill site only. The Hwy 221 site will also be reopening and following a regular schedule on Wednesday, October 16.

Transfer Station operations will continue to be limited throughout the week.

Until further notice, on Saturdays, the Transfer Station and Scale house will be closing at 12:00 PM for all customers.

The Transfer Station is open for residential customers bringing demolition debris Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Commercial construction and demolition is limited to Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Hours for commercial construction and demolition debris may be modified if capacity allows.

The Watauga County Solid Waste/Recycling Department operates a transfer station for municipal solid waste, an inert debris landfill (LCID), 10 staffed convenience centers, a mulching program for clean wood, a bulk metal and white goods (appliances) collections program, used tire collection and a recycling program.

The transfer station, LCID landfill, mulching, white goods and tire collection programs are located at 336 Landfill Road (off Highway 421 East).

All waste entering the Watauga County Transfer Station is weighed across the facility’s scales. Each household, in the County, is granted 2,000 pounds of free waste annually. Households may utilize their 2,000 pounds on Saturday’s only at no charge. All other users are charged a tipping fee of $59.00/ton for MSW and $59.00/ton for clean wood going to the mulch pile. The 2,000 pounds does not apply Monday through Friday.

The ten staffed convenience centers are located throughout the County. Watauga County residents may use any of the convenience center container sites listed below. The sites accept most types of household solid waste. Bulky items and materials, which do not easily fit into a standard household trash bag, should be taken to the transfer station for disposal.

Watauga County has a progressive Solid Waste/Recycling program and is always looking to adopt new methods and encourage recycling to safeguard the County's natural resources. All container sites are equipped with recycling containers for glass, newsprint, paper, and cardboard.
